Thank you to all for your fond memories, and never cease to hold him in the highest regard. He was much more than a big brother; companion, father figure, best friend, comedian, actor, life of the party, and most of all roll model are just a few things that he has been to me throughout my life. Being the baby bro of JD has been an esteemed position for me to hold, the highest I’ll ever have. I miss you Johnny.

Keeping a good thought for Johnny’s family as they deal with this huge loss. Johnny D was blessed with the very unique gift of making people laugh. He also challenged people to step outside their comfort zones so as to get the maximum amount of joy out of life. Johnny never got cheated in this regard and I am better for having known him. Johnny helped make the University of Illinois and Phi Psi experience a great one. Patrick Bernardi…

It is a very overused and usually not earned term but Johnny D was a true “original”…I understood he finally found a peace with his family that he struggled so hard to find in the unforgiving time I knew him during those explorative years in college…I trust his impact will remain with his family long after he has left…and John, if you are able to see this meager comment I hope you cock your head a little to the right and look at the screen out of the corner of your mischevious eyes and say either to yourself or out loud, “Cool…I guess”…

  18. Tim Mize says:

I met John In my teens, he was a great friend and had really been a great influence to me. I loved his “Live it” outlook on life and am sorry I have lost touch with him and everyone else on this page that might know me. My thoughts are are with you all.

  24. Jose Gonzalez says:

When I hear the name JD I immediately start to smile and laugh. I can just picture that sinister looking grin, the one that was pasted to his face whenever he entered a room. Or the one that he would wear when he wanted to borrow my scooter or car. Whenever I think of all the good times in college JD is always there. Johnny you truly enriched a part of my life and I’ll never forget you. We love you and you will be deeply missed. My prayers go out to the family.

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and boy, did John shine.

I can’t begin to tell you how heartbroken I am for you and John. You two had so much more ahead. John was a great guy. Quick with a witty comment, prepared to make fun of any of us at any time. 39. James McGarity says:

The funniest and funnest guy I ever knew. I met JD when I was 17, and he became my best friend. Not only because he made me laugh, but he had the patience to put up with me at that age. I never let go of our friendship, and it will live within me forever. Not just the humor that we all remember, but also the patience, the zeal for life, the honesty (brutal at times), and the willingness to say anything and everything important.
I love you brother. Thank you for helping me become who I am.
    James McGarity

John and I became good friends in High School. Though we never really kept in touch, I know that we had a lifelong connection and I’m sorry to hear that he’s no longer here. — I gave him a fishing knife called “Mac the knife”. — He gave me “Adam and The Ants”. — It was a good trade. — Love you John; peace to you and your family.
